Vanilla Ice Cream Is A Choice.... But Other Flavours Are Available

Sometimes, it seems that life forces upon us situations that demand choices. Some of these choices do offer a positive outcome. For example, if I’m in an ice cream parlour faced with dairy heaven, I’m predictable.

I’m regularly seduced into trying various harlequin-esque offerings but if I’m honest – my heart belongs to vanilla.

Still, whatever the choice; there is no downside. After all, it’s ice cream.

Equally, other choices in life don’t offer such an easy path. In terms of friends, family, work, career, relationships and life in general: decisions, choices and potential outcomes require more emotionally from us. And often, those associated emotions are challenging and may bring us to our knees.

That said, no matter how difficult the choice or the corresponding pain, you took charge -you made a choice on your terms, for your future. Often, when it comes to choices we are hamstrung by fear because we agonise over what we are losing, the emotions and opinions of others, and of course; what the future will bring.

Living in the status quo when your heart is demanding otherwise, is not a happy place for any of us. It is, literally, heart breaking. So, may I turn your hearts and minds to William Ernest Henley’s poem, Invictus for encouragement and inspiration when it comes to difficult choices.

INVICTUS

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate,

I am the captain of my soul.

Whatever you choose as your destination, I hope it is the one you have chosen from the heart.
